Further solidifying its commitment to sustainability, Miu Miu is launching a new limited-edition upcycled collection, which will for the first time also include bags.
Concurrently, the brand will introduce a capsule collection to celebrate Chinese New Year, comprising polo shirts, cardigans, cashmere slips and the brand’s signature Wander and Arcadie bags.
Actor Ever Anderson and model Huijia Chen were tapped to front the 2024 Miu Miu Upcycled Denim and Patch Bags collections in a series of photos by Jet Swan.
The Miu Miu Upcycled Denim collection is made of jeans dating before 2000 and sourced from denim specialists around the world, chosen specifically for their color, weight and the qualities of fading, prizing the patina of the garments.
Through a process done by hand, outer seams were preserved before deconstruction and refashioning took place, with the goal to reuse as much fabric as possible.
The collection comprises wide-leg jeans, trucker jackets, bra tops, shorts, baseball caps and hair bands.
Revisiting an embellishment first seen for spring 2022 in gold, flower embroideries in black were inspired by ’50s haute couture. Each flower was sewn by hand using silk chiffon petals, faceted beads and black crystal set into antique metal. Finishing touches on the garments are a leather label printed with the Miu Miu Upcycled logo and an internal tag in starched white canvas with the same branding.
The Miu Miu Upcycled Patch bag collection is made out of leather remnants from the brand’s own designs.
Each piece in the 2024 Miu Miu Upcycled collection will be afforded Aura Blockchain verification. In 2021, Miu Mui parent Prada Group together with Compagnie Financière Richemont joined LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, which in 2019 initiated the Aura platform, in the Aura Blockchain Consortium, which promotes transparency and the use of a single blockchain solution throughout the life cycle of luxury products. It is open to all luxury brands.
The Miu Miu Upcycled Denim and Patch collections are available in selected Miu Miu stores worldwide and on the brand’s e-store.
Miuccia Prada unveiled the first Upcycled collection for Miu Miu in October 2020, reworking vintage and non-designer finds from clothing stores and markets around the world, dating from the 1930s to the 1970s, encouraging circular design practices. She refashioned them by giving them the Miu Miu treatment through the brand’s signature embroideries and embellishments, from ribbons and sequins to crystals, beads and bows and all finished by hand. For this reason, each look was unique.
The collection debuted with a selection of 80 one-off dresses.
The initial collection was followed in the spring of 2021 by a collaboration with Levi’s giving new life to the brand’s signature denim 501 jeans and silhouettes, and trucker jackets from the 1980s and 1990s sourced directly from the Levi’s archives. They were re-fashioned with Miu Miu’s treatment of hand-embellished crystals, leather patches featuring Art Deco-inspired intarsia motifs, pearls and diamanté embroideries. The Upcycled by Miu Miu initiative continued with a limited edition of 50 leather jackets, specially created and shown on the brand’s runway for fall 2022. Each had been sourced from vintage markets across the world, then reworked by Miu Miu and finished in the atelier by hand.
