A 14-person group from Burkina Faso travelled to Karur, Tiruppur, and Coimbatore in search of improved cooperation with the textile and apparel sector.
Leading the team from GIZ, Gherzi Consultants and 2M Invest Consult arranged the four-day tour. The group visited the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Textile Management and the Southern India Textile Research Association in addition to the enterprises.
Approximately two lakh bales of cotton, all varieties save the extra long staple, are produced in Burkina Faso each year. Additionally, international sustainable cotton certification programs certify nearly all of the cotton produced. Just 2 per cent of the cotton produced is consumed domestically; the remainder is exported. 10 per cent of the exports go to India, according to Gherzi sources.
Cotton is imported from Burkina Faso by a few spinning mills and clothing manufacturers in Tiruppur and Karur.
The visit was intended to introduce the group to the textile and apparel industries. The units in Burkina Faso are mostly cottage industries that are investigating ways to add value to the cotton produced there. According to the sources, the delegation aimed to enhance cooperation with the industry in order to draw investments and foster business.
The entrepreneurs in this area were interested in learning more about the government’s benefits programs, worker skill development centres, and safety protocols.
According to a news release, GIZ carries out programs related to soil protection, safety, and nutrition. Additionally, it has been actively assisting Burkina Faso’s cotton industry for many years. Under a number of GIZ projects, including the creation of a textile incubator, Gherzi and 2M Consulting have been offering technical help to Burkina Faso’s cotton industry.
