Another region of Ukraine begins cultivating strategic raw materials for the textile and defense industries.

Cotton cultivation in Ukraine is being actively revived; this crop is a strategic raw material for textiles and the defense industry (gunpowder production). The first experimental crops in the Odesa region have demonstrated the feasibility of growing cotton in southern Ukraine. In 2026, eight hectares are planned for cotton cultivation in the Mykolaiv region. Since April 2025, the cultivation of this crop has been supported by a state program that provides farmers with ₴10,000 per hectare. One of the farms in the Mykolaiv region has already sown the first hectare of cotton.

The cultivation of this crop has become relevant due to climate change and demand in the domestic market. It is emphasized that with the development of industrial parks there is now an opportunity to sell raw materials not only for export but also for textile production in Ukraine. In addition, this crop has already been harvested in the Kherson region. Experts believe that the main problem remains harvesting, as Ukraine lacks specialized cotton harvesting machinery. However, as noted by the farm in the Mykolaiv region, if the crop’s potential is recognized, technical issues can also be resolved.
