Cotton 2040 is a new initiative convened by the sustainability nonprofit, Forum for the Future with support from the C&A Foundation, to make more sustainable cotton a mainstream commodity. The effort brings together a coalition of international brands and retailers, cotton standards, existing industry initiatives and other stakeholders across the supply chain to scale up and overcome barriers to sustainable cotton uptake across multiple standards. The group has identified four action priorities including building demand for more sustainable cotton, closing the loop on cotton, traceability throughout the cotton value chain and across standards, and creating a cross-industry forum to build resilience among smallholder cotton farmers. Over the next two to three years, working groups will develop best practices in work streams across these areas to share with the wider industry.
