Farm Rio champions sustainable denim with local cotton and smart chemistry

Brazilian fashion brand Farm Rio is making strides in sustainable denim production through the use of smart chemistry, ozone technology, and a localised supply chain, according to its latest sustainability report.

In 2022, the brand produced 158,175 pairs of Re-Farm jeans, a collection launched in 2019 that emphasises sustainability. These jeans incorporate biodegradable products in the washing process and are certified to meet the international Green Screen standard, ensuring compliance with the ZDHC Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MSRL).

Farm Rio is also committed to limiting the use of PFAS (Polyfluoroalkyl) compounds, environmentally harmful chemicals known for their resistance to breaking down.

What sets Re-Farm jeans apart is their use of cotton from suppliers who cultivate 100 percent ABR (Responsible Brazilian Cotton) certified cotton. These jeans are crafted in Brazil and undergo an ozone-based cleaning process, eliminating biodegradable non-ionic antimigrant wetting detergents from the production cycle.

In terms of sustainability, Re-Farm jeans offer impressive statistics. Compared to an average pair of jeans, each Re-Farm pair reduces water consumption by 47 per cent, energy usage by 46 per cent, and carbon dioxide emissions by 1.3 kg—equivalent to 30 hours of mobile phone use per garment.

In 2022, Farm Rio’s worldwide operations recorded gross revenues of US $ 93 million, marking an impressive 81 per cent increase compared to 2021.
