Senegal Cotton Production to Rise 13% in 2022-23

Senegal’s cotton production is forecast to rise 13% in the marketing year August 2022 through July 2023 compared with the current year, the U.S Agriculture Department said late Thursday.

Production is expected to rise to 45,000 480-pound bales from 40,000 bales this year, the department said in its annual Senegal cotton and products report.

The increase is attributed to expected average rains, low pest pressure and appropriate fertilizer use, it said.

Farmgate price may be increased to motivate farmers to plant more cotton in 2022-23 despite rising fertilizer prices, it said.

In the current year, cotton production is estimated to be up 5% compared with the year prior due to an increased use of fertilizer enriched with calcium, a good crop protection program, increased access to herbicides and the presence of technical sales advisors on the farms, allowing close supervision of producers, the report said.

Senegal exports all its cotton output. It doesn’t have any operating textile company, the department said.

In 2021, Senegal exported mainly to India and Turkey, accounting for 92% and 6% of exports, respectively, it said.

All cotton fiber is exported through the Port of Dakar, it said.
