Siemens Partners with Spinnova to Revolutionize Sustainable Textile Manufacturing

Siemens has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Spinnova, a company specializing in sustainable textile technology, to revolutionize global fiber production with minimal environmental impact. This collaboration reflects Siemens’ commitment to advancing sustainability and digitalization in the manufacturing sector.

Spinnova’s patented process creates textile fibers using a mechanical method inspired by spider web weaving, utilizing raw materials such as wood, leather, textiles, and agricultural waste. The resulting SPINNOVA® fiber can be spun into yarn and fabrics like conventional fibers, but with significantly reduced environmental impact—74% lower CO₂ emissions, 98% less water usage, zero waste, and no harmful chemicals.

Leveraging Siemens Xcelerator technologies, including digital twins and Totally Integrated Automation (TIA), Spinnova has accelerated its time to market, scaled production, and optimized efficiency. Siemens’ advanced solutions, such as Plant Simulation in the Tecnomatix® portfolio and Opcenter™ software, have enabled digital modeling of manufacturing processes, ensuring consistent quality and seamless scalability.

The collaboration is exemplified at the Woodspin factory in Jyväskylä, Finland—a joint venture between Spinnova and pulp producer Suzano. Siemens’ digital tools and automation technologies have enhanced transparency, operational performance, and cybersecurity, enabling Spinnova to achieve faster production ramp-up and build credibility for its mission of sustainable innovation.

“Spinnova’s circular technology is setting new sustainability benchmarks for the textile industry,” said Eryn Devola, Head of Sustainability at Siemens Digital Industries. “Our solutions are empowering them to scale efficiently and meet the demands of today’s market.” Tuomas Oijala, CEO of Spinnova, added, “Siemens’ expertise has transformed our manufacturing approach, helping us bring sustainable solutions to the market faster and more reliably.”

Siemens’ partnership with Spinnova aligns with its broader goal to merge cutting-edge technology with sustainability, driving positive environmental and societal change across industries. Siemens Digital Industries (DI) empowers organizations of all sizes in the process and discrete manufacturing sectors to fast-track their digital and sustainability transformations across the entire value chain.

With its advanced automation and software portfolio, Siemens redefines the way products and production are designed, realized, and optimized. The Siemens Xcelerator, an open digital business platform, further simplifies and accelerates this journey, making it scalable and efficient.

Collaborating with partners and leveraging an extensive ecosystem, Siemens Digital Industries helps businesses evolve into sustainable Digital Enterprises, supported by a global workforce of around 70,000 employees. Siemens AG, headquartered in Berlin and Munich, is a leading technology company specializing in industry, infrastructure, mobility, and healthcare, with a purpose to create technology that transforms everyday life for everyone.

Siemens seamlessly integrates the real and digital worlds, enabling customers to advance their digital and sustainability goals, making factories more efficient, cities smarter, and transportation greener. The company also holds a majority stake in Siemens Healthineers, a globally renowned medical technology leader driving breakthroughs in healthcare. In fiscal 2024, Siemens Group reported revenue of €75.9 billion and net income of €9.0 billion, employing approximately 312,000 people globally.
