The government of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu has signalled its intent to develop the state as a hub for sports and technical textiles, with a key allocation for establishing an Advanced Quality Testing Laboratory at Coimbatore. The facility, to be set up at the South India Textile Research Association (SITRA) at an estimated cost of ₹6 crore (~$661,900), is aimed at promoting high-quality sports textile production through advanced testing and certification capabilities.
The Tiruppur Exporters’ Association (TEA) has welcomed the measures announced in the Interim Budget 2026–27, presented in the State Assembly on Tuesday. In a press release, TEA President KM Subramanian said the Budget lays a strong foundation for industrial growth, textile expansion, infrastructure development and innovation-driven entrepreneurship in Tamil Nadu.
Among the key announcements benefiting the textile sector, the government has proposed setting up ten new handloom parks at an estimated cost of ₹20 crore (~$2.2 million). In addition, a handloom silk park will be established in the Arani region at an estimated cost of ₹24 crore, expected to generate employment for around 5,000 handloom weavers.
The Budget also includes infrastructure and logistics measures such as proposed metro rail expansion and new TIDEL parks in Tiruchi, Madurai and Hosur, which are expected to strengthen the overall industrial ecosystem.
TEA stated that the allocations and policy initiatives will enhance competitiveness, generate employment, strengthen MSMEs and further consolidate Tamil Nadu’s position as a leading textile and garment hub in India.
