The United States and Brazil received 72% of Peru’s total garment shipments between January and October 2017, the Association of Peruvian Exporters (Adex) reported on Friday.
Peruvian garment shipments to the United States reached US$488.607 million, which accounts for 67.8% of exports. On the other hand, exports to the South American giant totaled over US$33 million, meaning 4.6% of foreign sales.
Likewise, Adex noted Peru’s total garment shipments amounted to US$719.724 million in the analyzed period, thus registering a 2.6% growth.
“Both countries [the U.S. and Brazil] are overcrowded and dynamic markets; therefore, they are important [export] destinations for [Peruvian] companies […],” Adex Garment Committee Vice-Chairman Pedro Gamio expressed.
According to Adex Data Trade Business Intelligence System figures, the Andean country’s top garment importers are Argentina (+28.4%), Canada (+24%), Ecuador (+24%), France (+18.3%), Chile (+3%), Colombia (-0.97%), the United Kingdom (-6.85%), and Germany (-18%).
It is worth mentioning the recovery witnessed in exports to Argentina and Ecuador, as they had experience declines in past years.
Main export products
During the analyzed period, the most demanded goods were cotton t-shirts, knitted cotton shirts, undershirts, and synthetic shirts, among others.
Moreover, Gamio estimated the production and commercialization of light sportswear —namely jerseys— will be reinforced in the coming months, thanks to the optimism generated by Peru’s recent qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Imports
Peru’s garment imports barely totaled US$550 million in the first 10 months of 2017, lower than the figures registered in exports.
In the analyzed period, Peru’s major garment suppliers were: China, Bangladesh, India, Viet Nam, Turkey, Cambodia, Indonesia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka (Asia). Colombia was the sole South American market in this sense.
