Indian Textile Sector Embraces Circularity

In a groundbreaking collaboration, retail giant Aditya Birla, alongside the German development agency GIZ India and the Centre for Environment Education, has unveiled a comprehensive baseline assessment report on textile circularity processes within India’s industry. The Approaches for Circular Textile and Apparel Industry in India (ACTAII) provides valuable details on areas like resource consumption and waste generation in the domestic apparel manufacturing sector.

This report consists of a considerable amount of primary research from every strata of the textile and apparel industry – textile value chain, businesses, academia, ministry and associations, end of cycle stakeholders. There is real-time statistical information through in-depth surveys and interviews with stakeholder groups, subject matter experts, waste aggregators and consumers, from across the country.  Other than providing valuable statistics to identify hotspots for circular intervention in the textile industry, the report talks about some key challenges like – loopholes in infrastructure, value chain education and awareness, government policies, research and development and barriers in end-life management where circularity can be improved.

Recognising this institutional and commercial collaboration, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, IAS, Prajakta L Verma appreciates the efforts taken in this direction. She states that the integration of sustainability and circularity in the value chain is crucial for the greater well-being of the planet and its inhabitants.

The baseline assessment report marks a significant stride towards enhancing circularity in Indian textile and apparel sector, which, for the most part, is gradually becoming more open towards sustainable practices.
